A lively concert for ex-service men and women with dementia.

Another dazzling programme of popular songs and West African music for the residents of Lister House – a community for people with dementia.

Wednesday 22 June – Royal Eye Hospital – 12.30pm

As Artists in Residence, Stringboxes bring smiles to the faces of patients and staff at the hospitals through their exciting performances of popular classics alongside jazz, gypsy, world and contemporary music.

Saturday 25 June – Bands on the Hill, Mellor – 7.30pm

Stringboxes are back headlining at this rural festival event by popular demand! Guaranteed to get everyone dancing and singing!

Tuesday 28 June – Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield – 11am

Ward visits in the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit, bringing the joy of live music sensitively to the bedside.

Tuesday 28 June – Lyme Green Hall Care Home, Macclesfield – 2.30pm

A participatory concert for older people with Dementia including songs to join in with and music to dance and shake along to.

A soothing and uplifting programme from regular favourites Stringboxes.

Thursday 30 June – Callands Care Home, Warrington – 2pm

Lively participatory music for the older residents at Callands. 

Tuesday 5 July – Northern General Hospital Sheffield – 10.45am, Brearley Unit

Two concerts for patients on the Stroke Rehabilitation/Dementia wards at Northern General. Stringboxes will work flexibly across the wards, visiting bays and bringing music right to the bedside.

Friday 8 July – Stockdales – 11.15am

A participatory workshop for around 15 young adults and their support staff, exploring African and popular songs and improvisation using hand held percussion. Stringboxes have led many workshops with this group and have devised special songs working alongside them.

Friday 8 July – Bradley House Nursing Home – 1.30pm

Music to energise the residents with dementia at this local care home, supported by The People’s Postcode through Music in Hospitals.

Wednesday 13 July – St John’s Church, Buxton Fringe Festival Performance  – 7.30pm

Stringboxes join forces with the early music group Partita with whom Holly also performs as a singer, recorder player and lutenist. The concert will be in two halves with some full ensemble pieces. This will be a unique opportunity to hear early music from across Europe and West Africa. Stringboxes and Partita are both winners of the small ensemble award from Buxton Festival and return by popular demand.

Wednesday 20 July – Royal Eye Hospital – 12.30pm

Artists in residence Stringboxes return to the concerts series to bring light and life to the atrium for patients, visitors and staff.

13 November 1.30pm – St Mary’s Hospital – Stringboxes perform as part of their residency programme at Central Manchester University Hospitals (CMFT), bringing a light programme combining west african, gypsy, popular and jazz.

14 November – Stockdales Centre for adults with learning difficulties – back by popular demand, Stringboxes lead a workshop for the music group at Stockdales in which they will teach some West African songs as well as creating improvised music using the group’s ideas as a starting point.

14 November 2pm – Dermot Murphy NHS Centre for adults with complex needs – Helen Hamlyn Trust support this Music in Hospitals concert given by Stringboxes

22 November 9pm – 12am – Dimitris on Deansgate – Stringboxes appear with a pianist to enliven Saturday night at Dimitris!

Wednesday 23 April @ 2pm, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital – Michael and Holly perform as Artists in Residence at Central Manchester University Hospitals as part of the LIME Concerts Series, bringing their distinctive, virtuosic crossover music to the children’s hospital community.

28/29 April @ 2pm – Whitby Tour for Music in Hospitals. Holly and Michael are going to be sharing their music with people presenting a journey to places they may have been to or may not have been to before. Gypsy music and African rhythms combine with Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, the Beatles and Disney! Everyone can join in if they want to.

Thursday 1 May @ 2pm, Royal Eye Hospital Atrrium – Michael and Holly are joined by gospel artist Merle the Pearl for a set which features Blues and Gospel numbers as a showcase for the Saturday event at the Carlton Club.

Saturday 3 May @ 7.30pm, Carlton Club, Whalley Range – Michael and Holly are supporting the Blues and Gospel Train event, a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of an event staged at Chorltonville Station in which Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and other amazing blues legends performed for a select audience. They’ll be playing some of the original programme with the incredible vocalist Merle the Pearl!

Sunday 11 May @ 6pm, Dimitris, The Olive and Vine, Didsbury – Michael and Holly will dazzle diners with their eclectic mix of world, jazz and popular music.

Saturday 16 August 2014, @ 6pm – Lower Lacon Caravan Park, Wem, Shropshire, SY4 5RP – Stringboxes perform a set of interactive songs and stories around the campfire for a charity called ‘Special Kids in the UK’ http://www.specialkidsintheuk.org – A camp for around 200 families with children with special needs.

24 September 2014, @ 2pm – Bowmere Hospital, Chester – invited back by the Occupational Therapy team following a great event in June, Stringboxes will work with patients in the secure mental health unit, sharing songs and stories.

September: Michael has been touring Romania this month and will be headlining the exciting Johnny Raducanu Festival on 10 October with his Romanian band. Meanwhile, Holly is performing alongside Deli Babies on Friday 3 October at 12.30pm in the Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester and headlining for Mind’s Mental Health Awareness event at the Anthony Burgess Centre on Sunday 12 October from 7pm.

Stringboxes resume their residencies at Central Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust, whose patron is Jools Holland and at the Olive and Vine, Didsbury, performing weekly recitals from 13 October onwards – full details to be announced soon.

A world premiere performance of Holly’s composition ‘You are the Mirror’ for Manchester Cathedral Choristers and Kora, with a double bass soliloquy written and performed by Michael Cretu, Holly’s Stringboxes partner.

Wednesday 1 July – Rugby School (all day)

In these workshops students from Rugby School will learn a traditional Gambian song and then be shown ways of improvising around it using voice and body percussion. Together we’ll bring the smiling coast of West Africa to Rugby for one day!

Friday 10 July – Zest Fest at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital 11.30am – 12.15pm

Stringboxes will feature on the Solar Stage at Zest Fest as part of an all day event filling the children’s hospital and the outside spaces with music and creativity as part of LIME’s Music for Health programme for whom Holly works as a specialist. Funded by Youth Music.

Stringboxes are back at the Clarion Centre working with patients with acquired brain injury or mental health issues, creating a soothing, energising programme of music with participatory elements as well as space for relaxation.

Tuesday 4 August – Tameside General Hospital – 2.30pm

Stringboxes provide participatory music for staff and patients as part of a celebratory event marking the appointment of a specialist Admiral Nurse in Dementia care. The event is being filmed for local television and will be attended by the Trust Chairman, local MP, members of Tameside Council’s Public Health Programme and the Chief Executive of Dementia UK.

A varied programme of accessible and inclusive familiar and unfamiliar music for people at the care home, some with dementia.

Stringboxes accompany the BBC Daily Service quartet of singers in this live broadcast featuring music arranged and composed by Holly.

Wednesday 26 August – Humphrey Booth Centre, Salford – 11am

Back by request following their incredible first session earlier this year, Stringboxes lead a lively singalong for people with dementia and with special needs.

Wednesday 26 August – Swinton Hall, Salford – 2pm

Stringboxes perform for a large group of people with dementia and their carers, providing opportunities for stimulation, participation and relaxation within a programme of music from around the world and across the eras.

Thursday 27 August – Littleborough Arts Festival St Barnabus Church – 7.30pm  

Holly and Michael are part of the Manchester International Roots Orchestra, directed by Michael and they will be giving a performance to celebrate the launch of the new MIRO album Time for Change which was recorded and mastered at the RNCM.

Stringboxes’ longstanding residency at the Royal Eye Hospital continues with this Autumn performance where they bring the magic of the Kora, voice and double bass to the atrium space, sharing beautiful music with those waiting for appointments or prescriptions or coming down from the wards for the concert.

Tuesday 6 October – People’s Assembly Against Austerity – Manchester Cathedral – 7pm

Following their recent performances at Manchester Cathedral which met with great critical acclaim, Stringboxes have been invited by Canon Holgate to contribute to the important assembly against austerity at which a number of high profile speakers will be giving insights into their work against austerity.

Stringboxes will be performing a participatory programme of songs for older people in the dementia unit at the hospital. We’re always amazed by the effect of music with old and young alike and ity is a privilege to bring music to this unit, especially as this is our first visit.

Stringboxes are artists in residence at the Eye Hospital and have had such lovely feedback from people about their playing and how it lifts spirits and makes the time pass more pleasantly. They’ve met people who have made the journey off the ward regularly to hear the music which they have said has distracted them from some of the anxiety and boredom of being hospitalised. It’s a privilege to be part of this series whose Patron is Jools Holland.

Holly and Michael will work with a group of older people with a range of difficulties, sharing some positive musical experiences drawing on the familiar and the unfamiliar.

As we approach the new year, Stringboxes look to the past and the future in an exquisite programme of music from around the world.

Thursday 31 December – Beechfield Lodge Salford – 2.00pm

Stringboxes will share music with a group of elderly residents to contemplate the year to come as well as reflecting back on yesteryear.

Hot from the Gambia, Holly will share some of her experiences as Stringboxes set sail in their first concert together of the new year!

Following on from Friday’s sizzling performance, Stringboxes take it the next level with their new music.

A bit of respite from waiting for a prescription or feeling worried about an appointment – Stringboxes have had lovely comments from people about the soothing and enlivening properties of their music and they love sharing music with people as artists in residence.

Monday 8 February 10.30am – Armana House (YO26 5RN), Yorkshire

Invited by activities coordinator Siobhan Spaven, Stringboxes bring music to a group of older people in respite care who are convalescing and who may have dementia. This concert is sponsored by Norman Collinson Charitable Trust through the charity Music in Hospitals.

Monday 8 February 2.30pm – Granby Court (HG1 4SR), Harrogate

Margaret Forge has asked for Stringboxes to provide a light participatory programme of music for the elderly residents who might be quite frail thanks to the charity Music in Hospitals.

Tuesday 9 February 11am – The Bridges School, Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne (NE1 4LP)

An uplifting concert for children aged 0-18 at the children’s hospital in Newcastle supported by Barbour Trust through the charity Music in Hospitals.

Tuesday 9 February 2pm – Newcastle Society for the Blind (NE1 8XS) 

Stringboxes will share music with people with visual impairments in this concert at the auditorium at MEA House in Newcastle, sponsored by Boshier-Hinton Foundation through the charity Music in Hospitals.

Wednesday 10 February 10.30am – Langley Park Care Home (DH7 9YY), Durham

Stringboxes will bring an uplifting morning of music to residents at Langley Park Care Home, sharing the old and new and getting toes tapping. This concert is funded by People’s Postcode Trust through the charity Music in Hospitals.

Wednesday 10 February 2pm – Byker Hall Care Home (NE6 2SB) Newcastle Upon Tyne

A concert for older frail residents at Byker Hall featuring old familiar songs as well as new energising ones from Africa and Romania. This concert is funded by People’s Postcode Trust through the charity Music in Hospitals.

Thursday 11 February 11am – St Oswald’s Hospice (NE3 1EE), Gosforth, Newcastle Upon Tyne

This is a concert for children and their families who are resident and also day visitors to the hospice. Stringboxes are joined today as ‘Mysterious Collective’ by fellow musician Simon Wood on hang drum. Simon has played with Stringboxes previously to great critical acclaim.  Simply Health has made this concert possible through the charity Music in Hospitals.

A stimulating and sparkling concert for elderly residents featuring Simon Wood on the hang drum, supported again by the People’s Postcode Trust.

Mysterious Collective – Stringboxes with hang drum guru Simon Wood dazzle and delight with their intuitive grooves from somewhere between Africa, Romania and outer space (via Newcastle)

Thursday 11 February – Chilli Bizarre – 6pm (NE1 2TQ)

‘Chilli Bizarre’ is a shop space that is part of Chilli Studios which provides a number of creative services and opportunities for people who are experiencing mental health issues or other factors that may lead to social exclusion. Stringboxes are joined by Simon Wood on Hang Drum for a scintillating programme ranging from club classics to club sodas.

Preparing for their concert in March, both Holly and Michael have been writing original compositions and you may catch a glimmer of this today!

Wednesday 2 March – Royal Eye Hospital – 12.30pm

Stringboxes dazzle in this their regular slot at the lunchtime concerts series whose Patron is Jools Holland.

Friday 11 March – Royal Northern College of Music, Carol Nash Room – 7.30pm

Following their critically acclaimed performance in Spring 15 at the RNCM, Stringboxes have been invited back to present a new programme of work featuring original compositions by both Holly and Michael.
